Britannia Textiles, Nelson, New Zealand

Britannia Textiles has been in the textile business for over 20 years. We supply to Hotels, Motels, the Health Industry and Laundries throughout New Zealand.

Britannia Textiles remains a family owned Nelson business with our own sewing room here in Nelson.

Ethical business practice:

Textiles are not made in New Zealand, so although we use our plant here for as much value adding as we can, we, like everybody, import.

Mostly our towelling is made in Pakistan, our sheets and tea towels in China, and our Table Linen is mostly from Milliken in the States who have plants throughout the world.

We are proud that we personally visit these plants.

These partnerships have been developed over decades with ethical businesses that pay proper wages, provide proper working conditions, and do not exploit their workforce.

Pakistan – most towels

We visit this plant ourselves and have a very long close relationship having helped the plant get off the ground in the early days.

This plant is proud to have been audited and approved as follows:

(click name to open pdf certificate)

WRAP: (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production). A Social Compliance certification.

Oeko Tex (Confidence in textile): Spanish lab testing for harmful and non-authorised substances.

ISO9001:2000 (Quality management system).

China – most bed linen and teatowels

Rather than simply tendering out work, ALL our work is placed through 'our man on the spot' who lives both here in Nelson and in China – he collects a lot of Air Points!

If there is any work that cannot be done at our usual plant (e.g. we had some slippers made) the plant is visited and checked before approval.

We have a clear requirement that work cannot be granted to any place that does not conform to ethical and legal practices, and indeed have refused to use plants that make goods for some popular NZ brand names.

This standard is passed down to us from the company's founder and chief share holder and will not be compromised. It may cost a few pennies more, but ethical work and excellent product is available in China – you just need to ask for it and have a way of ensuring you get it – which is where we are unique on the NZ market.
